With the opening of Terminal 1 station complementing the Terminal 3 station, which has been receiving passengers from the beginning, coupled with a change in baggage policy, the RTA hopes to attract a steady stream of business as well as other travellers on the Metro.Īlthough it has been only a few days since the opening of Airport Terminal 1 station along with six others, there has already been a 20 per cent increase in daily ridership of Metro.Īccording to the RTA, Metro ridership crossed 100,000 on Sunday, the first weekday after the opening of the new stations. Signboards have also been installed at various locations in the stations to inform people about the baggage policy. Safety and security measures have been taken to keep the bags from slipping away and damage the people or the train. “The trolleys won’t be allowed as there are security issues involved with their use and even in international airports trolleys are allowed (only) up to a certain point,” said Abdullah, adding that the RTA’s policy on the matter is consistent with all major Metro operators in the world.Ībdullah also said the baggage is allowed to be carried throughout the day and even during peak hours.Ī certain area in each car is dedicated for luggage and commuters are allowed to keep their baggage only at the specified places. “Any passenger carrying the baggage of the specified dimension will be allowed to board the trains to and from Airport Terminal 1 or any other station and the policy is not restricted to air travellers only, although it is intended to help the air-bound passengers,” Abdullah informed.Ĭommuters carrying baggage should not expect any help from any quarters as there won’t be porters or Metro staff available to help carry the baggage nor will the trolleys be allowed. However, the baggage policy will not only benefit air travellers but will serve the common commuters alike. He added that the weight of the baggage will be at the discretion of the Metro staff at the gates.
The passenger should be able to carry or pull the items on his own without any help and without causing any inconvenience to others or damage the public property,” said Ramadan Mohammed Abdullah, Director of Rail Operations at the RTA. Two bags of varying sizes, a bigger one with specifications of W81xH58xD30cm and a smaller hand bag with size specifications of W55xH38xD20cm, are allowed. The policy change came in the wake of opening of a metro station recently at Airport Terminal 1, which remains one of the busiest in the world.Īs per the new policy, a commuter is allowed to carry the amount of luggage that an Emirates Airlines Economy Class passenger is permitted to carry.
